Business support systems

Apart from creating services for clients, Telefónica I+D develops systems that enhance the overall quality of the services as well as reducing their cost. As a general rule, these are not directly perceived by the end clients, nevertheless they provide added value and quality to the Group's services ensuring Telefónica stands out from the rest in terms of services and quality.

The business support systems use Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) to add a competitive edge to Telefónica's operations and services, in response to the increase in the number of competitors in the sector..

We carry out the following activities:

  • Mid- and long-term: Exploring the technological and business environment, collaborating with the industry and standard developing organizations, carrying out innovation projects and participating through presentations and other types of contribution at events held within the research community.
  • Short term: Transferring new technologies and standards to Telefónica's business units and providing efficient solutions.

Our areas of activity are:

  • Real-time rating system and payment architectures. Thanks to these, it is possible to set prices and promotions in real-time. Telefónica I+D developed Telefónica's most widespread real-time rating system, which has almost 100 million clients.
  • User Modelling. These handle large volumes of data on client behaviour using data mining, user modelling and artificial intelligence techniques. The aim is to predict their needs and provide made-to-measure services.
  • New generation of business models. The study of how new technologies can be applied to business processes.
