What we do

Since it first began in 1988, the activities carried out by Telefónica I+D have always been closely linked to evolution in telecommunications and what society requires from this field. Each year, the company carries out more than 1,500 projects centred on innovation in the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).

These projects have allowed Telefónica I+D to contribute decisively to the development of broadband and ADSL and the Internet services offered by Telefónica. They have also enabled us to play an important role in the extension and deployment of mobile services to new markets, strengthening client care systems, making the digital home a reality, and advancing the development of the new Information Society.

Our activities can be divided into the following areas:

Technological strategy

We fuse Telefónica I+D's overall technological vision with that of the Telefónica Group.

Network and service management

We develop and integrate Telefónica's service and network management systems, thus ensuring that Telefónica's clients enjoy high-quality services at all times.

Scientific research

We are involved in the area of applied research and, in this case, we adopt a more long-term approach, tackling the more significant challenges facing Telefónica and working in those areas that represent an area of opportunity for the future.

Networks and services platforms

We create the networks and platforms used to launch new services, guarantee these are successfully implanted and ensure high-quality operation.

Services

We design services for all the clients of the Telefónica Group: individuals, companies and homes. We also create new Internet services for Telefónica, paying special attention to the areas with the greatest outreach, such as user-generated contents and social networks.

Business support systems

We generate systems that help with the day-to-day running of the Telefónica Group, such as invoicing, procurement and logistics.
